DRIVERS pay £12 more to fill up at motorway services than supermarkets.

Despite wholesale costs dropping last month, the average price of motorway petrol increased 6p to £6.80 a gallon.

The costs at supermarkets and traditional forecourts stayed the same, said an RAC monthly report.

Filling a 55-litre family car with petrol averaged £69.88 at supermarkets and £82.25 at motorway services.

For diesel the average figure was £72.29 compared to £83.85.

Motorway retailers blame higher operating costs, including delivery and staff.

The RAC said September was a mixed month as a late 2p-a-litre cut meant petrol prices stayed flat while diesel climbed another penny to its highest for more than four years.

Spokesman Simon Williams added: “Petrol drivers will hope September was the month that stopped the rot in terms of rising pump prices — but this may well not be the case.

“Oil is at a four-year high and there is volatility in the exchange rate.”

RAC figures show a hefty divide between prices at the supermarket and on the motorway, for both diesel and unleaded fuel
