An actress has revealed how she was left in tears after being catcalled twice within the space of just a few minutes.

Stage star Jemima Watling, 25, who lives in Manchester, tweeted she 'burst into tears' when two men leered at her and harassed her in the street.

Moments later, while still crying, she was catcalled for a second time.

Jemima, who is starring as Meg in Little Women at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre, blasted the 'depraved' men and said it made her 'hate being female'.

Taking to Twitter, Jemima wrote: 'Catcalling is not new. Today it just caught me at a low point; I yelled f*** off when two guys leered at me and they laughed in my face. I burst into tears.'

She revealed that another man catcalled her minutes later, despite seeing that she was 'openly crying'. She added that he also laughed in her face.

She called it an example of 'every day sexism' with a hashtag at the end of her tweet.

She said the thought of it 'fills me with such rage and sadness'.

Jemima continued: 'Re last tweet; I have been rethinking it: you have to be some depraved kind of s*** to harass someone who is already crying. She could have had any kind of bad news. The point is, he doesn’t know; and he doesn’t care.

Her tweets received over 200 likes and retweets, with many of Jemima's followers sending her messages of support.

One tweeted: 'Why do people think it’s okay to treat women that way. To make us think twice whether what we’re wearing is suitable or not, to make us feel uncomfortable in a place where we’re supposed to feel safe & to leave us questioning our worth. I am so sorry this happened to you.

Another posted: 'Ah this is just so sad. Sending you a massive hug, lots of love and a massive kick in the sensitive area for the douche bags. You are a wonderful strong lady. Positivity for you.'
