THE UK has a few main supermarkets – Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda – with budget retailers Aldi and Lidl popping up over the last few years.
With the last two taking the market by storm with their cheap produce and weekly deals, Tesco is now trying to get a slice of the action.

What is Jack’s?
Jack’s is the new budget brand launched by Tesco.
The brand is named after the supermarket’s founder, Jack Cohen.
Tesco chief executive, Dave Lewis, said: “Jack Cohen championed value for customers and changed the face of British shopping.
“It’s fitting that today, we mark the beginning of Tesco’s celebration of 100 Years of Great Value by launching a new brand, and stores bearing his name: Jack’s.

“Great tasting food at the lowest possible prices with 8 out of 10 products grown, reared or made in Britain.”
What will they sell?
Tesco is trying to take on the German budget brands Aldi and Lidl, who have seen their market share more than double to 13.1 per cent in the last five years.
Tesco is emphasising its British produce, with signs advertising “All our cereal is made in England”, and “Every drop of fresh milk is British”.
It’s also been claimed that eight of ten products in the new store will either be grown, reared or made in the UK.

While Aldi has a regular feature, the ‘super 6’, Jack’s is rivalling that with its ‘fresh five’ offer.
And previews of the store show a tin of beans on sale for 29p, a loaf of bread for 45p and a small loaf for 75p.
Where will they be opening?
The first store has opened its doors in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.

Over the next six months there are plans to open a further 10 to 15 new Jack’s stores.
Roughly half of that figure will come from converting existing Tesco stores, and the remainder will be either brand new sites or built next to Tesco stores.
Some of the locations have been revealed as St Helens, on Merseyside, and Rubery in Worcestershire.
