TYPHOON Trami is set to batter Japan this weekend with gusts of 125mph as the powerful storm gets set to make landfall.
The powerful typhoon is currently gaining strength in the western Pacific Ocean, and is expected to pick up speed on Friday afternoon.
Weather channel Meteorologist Kait Parker said: “Trami will barely move at all for the next several hours but will pick up on Friday and take off toward the north.
“By Saturday evening it is expected to regain strength with winds up to 125mph and accelerate toward Japan’s mainland, including the capital of Tokyo on Sunday.
“The centre of Trami will not directly hit Tokyo, but impacts will affect the capital as well as Osaka and other large areas of Japan.”
Residents across most of Japan’s islands have been warned to prepare for flash flooding, power cuts and high winds, with many areas evacuated in preparation.
Mudslides, rough seas and road and air travel disruption are also major concerns for the island nation.

Trami is expected to strike the popular island resort of Okinawa on Sunday, where an election for the island’s governor will be underway.
Residents have been urged to vote in advance to avoid getting caught up in the tropical storm and its aftermath.
Incredible satellite images show the powerful storm making its way towards Japan, where it is expected to make landfall on the country’s Ryuku islands with winds of 115 to 125mph.
The images were taken by astronaut Alexander Gerst from the International Space Station on September 25.
Describing what he was seeing, he wrote: “As if somebody pulled the planet’s gigantic plug.
“Staring down the eye of yet another fierce storm.
“Category 5 Super Typhoon Trami is unstoppable and heading for Japan and Taiwan.
“Be safe down there!”
The typhoon has since been downgraded to a category 3 storm.
