New photo Runaway parrot halts cricket match after landing on player’s shoulder

A CRICKET match was halted when a parrot swooped in and landed on a player’s shoulder.

Tom Flannery, 67, was fielding as the macaw ­circled the pitch then chose him to perch on.

The parrot sat on Tom Flannery’s shoulder for a few minutes before being carried off

Players joked he looked like Long John Silver.

Opposition captain Tim Davis said: “It stayed there for two to three minutes while it was coaxed off him and we got a good photo.

“We had to stop the game because this bird was big enough to take someone’s finger off. Luckily we were about ready to have a break for a drink.

“Then someone came on the field and took the bird away.” The drama unfolded as Hinckley Amateur Thirds hosted local rivals Hathern Old ­Seconds.

The macaw was returned to its owner, who lives near the ground in Leicestershire.

Hathern skipper Tim added: “We were batting when we heard this loud squawking noise coming from the trees. Then this big macaw started flying round really low before coming to rest on the shoulder of one of the Hinckley team.”

Hinckley chairman Phil York added: “It seems to have taken a shine to Tom.

“He doesn’t look much like a pirate — he has a bit of a beard but no eyepatch or wooden leg.”
