IT’S an explanation no-one could have twigged.
Lucas Hernandez says he drunkenly embraced a tree after France’s World Cup win because… he was lonely and pining for “someone to dance with”.
To be fir, the Atletico Madrid defender was not just hugging it, his arms and legs were wrapped round it HALFWAY UP.
Now Get French Football News report Hernandez revealing: “Everyone had their wives/girlfriends at Istra to celebrate, except me.
“My girlfriend was in Madrid because she was pregnant. I needed to find someone to dance with, so i chose the tree.”
Obviously… although many people might have settled for making a quick trunk call to their partner.
And any suggestions Hernandez was mumbling merrily “Your my best friend, I love yew” while he was sap-dancing are so far unconfirmed.
But the 22-year-old’s revelation has captivated social media.
Twitter responses included: “We all support Lucas Hernandez from now on” and absolutely brilliant”.
Hernandez was as solid as an oak in the centre of France’s rearguard as they overcame Croatia 4-2 in the final.
And he has already won the Uefa Super Cup this season, as Atletico beat their fiercest rivals Real by the same scoreline last month.
Evergreen striker Diego Costa poached a double for Atletico in that match.
Hernandez, though, is thought to have restrained his celebrations to mere humans.
So perhaps he has turned over a new leaf.
