She belted out ABBA hits while starring in Mammia Mia: Here We Go Again earlier this year.

And Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian, says it was an iconic Australian film that inspired her fascination with the Swedish pop group.

'I really got into [ABBA] from Muriel's Wedding,' the 72-year-old told The Project on Monday.

The 1994 Australian comedy featured a scene where characters Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) and Rhonda Epinstalk (Rachel Griffiths) who performed a lip sync performance to Waterloo.

Cher explained that she was not immediately drawn to the Swedish pop group when they first made waves in 1977.

'You know they weren't that big in America,' she said.

The Believe singer noted that ABBA had hits on US music charts with Mamma Mia and Dancing Queen, but said their impact on American music 'wasn't the way it was all over the world'.

Cher's revelation comes after she recently surprised unsuspecting fans when she stopped by an ice-cream shop in New Zealand on Saturday.

The I Got You Babe songstress took a break from her international tour to stop and get gelato at Auckland's Giapo.

She was pictured holding a 'chocolate evolution' cone, which has three types of chocolate, and posed for fan photos.

Annarosa Petrucci, a spokesperson for Giapo, told Stuff: 'It's just the coolest thing ever that we were able to give her a 'taste' of Auckland'.

'On top of that she was such a sweetheart in store.' 

The pop icon is about to embark on her her 11-show tour of Australia and her first show will be in Newcastle, New South Wales, on September 26.
