On September 7th, arguably the best Spider-man game was released on PS4, and pretty much everyone’s been spending their week playing it. Not me, however, I’m an Xbox guy, but geez, this game might make me convert. Anyways, on top of the cool hidden secrets, the amazing costumes and the tribute to the twin towers, there was one little thing that got a shit-ton of attention in the media.
This wonderful, in-game proposal that should have made all the gamer girls swoon, but instead became the saddest Easter Egg in history and spiralled into some Jerry Springer-type shit.

So, while all this went down over the weekend after the game dropped, I wanted to just let things play out to see where the truth actually lied, so bear with me.
The guy who requested the proposal is Tyler Schultz, a student at the University of Central Florida and an avid gamer.
He’s also a huge Spider-man fan.

He was with his girlfriend Maddie for 5 years when he came up with a brilliant idea to propose to her. Now, from what we can gather, he’s a huge gamer and she just went with it because she loved him.
Apparently, they had talked about how cool a proposal at a convention would be, and Tyler figured he could one-up that, so he wanted do get an inclusion in the upcoming Spider-man from Insomniac.
So he reached out.

Tweeting at @EvanFilarca (the admin of a Spider-man fan group) as well as people at Insomniac, he asked if there was any way to get a proposal in there.

After some back and forth, they agreed. The proposal was on. This was back in May.
Apparently, things were still good at the time, according to Tyler.

This is my favourite tweet out of the series. Frankly, it sounds like Tyler was pretty oblivious, based on the events that followed.
In any case, he and Insomniac went back and forth with ideas and came up with a kickass proposal. Tyler said that the dev team couldn’t have been nicer about the whole thing.

Fast forward to September 7, and lo and behold, gamers found this in their game, and started sharing it with the photo mode.

Frankly, the whole movie theatre marquee would totally melt my heart, but I guess I’m more of a softie than Maddie.

Sadly, it was not meant to be. As people started to share the easter egg, Tyler came forward with the truth.
Maddie had broken up with him 3 weeks prior, and apparently was sleeping with his brother. According to a video he posted on Youtube, it all came as a big surprise.
Of course, a literal shitstorm followed. A lot of people jumped in Tyler’s corner and started severely harassing Maddie, while others started jumping down Tyler’s throat.
After a few days, Maddie came forward with the truth: she broke it off with Tyler because the relationship had soured a while ago. She was finding that she was more of a mother to him, than a partner – reminding him to do things, to be better with his money, telling him that he had to things other than gaming 24/7, etc… They were fighting constantly, and he was given a month to try to turn things around, which he squandered.
As for the brother, there is no relationship – he and Maddie are just friends (or not… I’m still unclear on that).
In a follow up after the fact, Tyler confirmed that this version of events was pretty close to the truth and wished his ex-flame well in some follow up videos. Most importantly, he just wants people to leave Maddie alone, and let them both move on with their lives.

Now, for me, I think this is still a sweet move and perhaps a different girl would have appreciated it, and I think that everything could have been handled differently. But at the same time, relationships are an organic process that requires input and work from both sides and if you’re not doing everything in your power to honour and respect your partner (this includes you Maddie), then it’s gonna fall apart. Trust me, I’m 10 years in, and it’s been some of the hardest but most rewarding times of my life.
But it’s not all gloom and doom. Jacinda Chew, the art director for the game, reached out to Tyler in a now deleted tweet, and asked if they could change it in a patch.
I mean, she probably deleted it once Maddie’s side came out, but still, there’s a positive change to be had here.

Tyler requested that it be a tribute to his grandmother, who passed from cancer and helped ignite Schultz’s passion for Spider-Man. She gave him his first Spider-Man comic book as well as a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the first appearance of the web slinger.
So a happy ending, I guess.
