MICROSOFT is about to hike the price of Xbox Live Gold subscriptions by 20 per cent.
That means a year-long membership of the service that lets you play multiplayer games online, gives out a couple of free games every month and discounts on many more, will cost £10 more.
The changes are coming into effect over the next few months, with current subscribers able to renew up until August 7 at the old rates.
If you don’t have an active Xbox Live Gold subscription you’re going to have to act fast, with prices going up on May 8, according to a statement provided to VG247.
The change is “to ensure gamers have consistent pricing for Xbox Live Gold across Europe” and is down to “changing market conditions”, according to Microsoft.
The price of Xbox Live Gold has barely changed since the service launched with the original Xbox in 2002, with the UK monthly price being fixed at the current £5.99 since 2010.
The UK skipped the last round of price rises that hit other regions several years ago, and according to Microsoft these changes are just that increase finally catching up with us.
“This new pricing is aligned to the changes we made in the region in 2016,” they said.
It seems likely that the monthly price will change too, as the current £5.99 price would make it 2p cheaper per quarter than the new £17.99 three-month price.

If you want to avoid the price rises, then you can get 12-, 6- and 3-month cards at the current price now, and add them to your account — in fact, you can have up to three years stacked onto your account if you want.
That should last you until the Xbox 2 comes out, and well into the next generation.
The price does bring it roughly in line with Sony’s similar PlayStation Plus.
