DC UNITED striker Wayne Rooney baffled MLS fans with an incredible goal scored from a free-kick – taken just yards away from the corner flag.

The Manchester United legend whipped the ball into Orlando City’s box from a ridiculous angle and it somehow ended up rattling the side net.

Rooney, 33, took the free-kick just after the half hour mark, with the ball placed not far away from the corner flag.

It appeared that he attempted a cross when the former Red Devils skipper sent the ball towards his team-mates scrambling in keeper Brian Rowe’s box.

But Rowe was absolutely stunned when the ball swished past him and hit the side net to double Washington’s lead.

Although, the Orlando goalie could have been fouled by DC defender Frederic Brillant when trying to make a save.

But fans on social media were split whether Rooney in fact intended to score or meant to cross the ball.

Chris wrote: “Why is it that whenever big-named players do this it’s portrayed as “great” but when it’s a lesser name it’s a fluke? He blatantly meant to cross that.”

While Mikko added: “I’m sure he was going for goal. Outstanding once again from Wayne Rooney You never stop to amaze me.”

Another said: “Reminds me when he broke the all time record in Manchester United.”

And Peter wrote: “I’ll be honest, I thought Rooney was washed up when he came to the league. Glad he proved me wrong.”

Steve Birnbaum opened the scoring for DC six minutes in the game, with Orlando’s Dom Dwyer puling one goal back in the second half to settle the result at 2-1.

Rooney has been in terrific form since the start of the MLS season.

He has scored four goals and added an assist in four games after bagging a hat-trick against Salt Lake City ahead of the international break.

Both DC and Orlando players were stunned to see the ball rattling the net after Rooney’s free kick
