TAIWAN fighter jets have been forced to intercept Chinese planes which crossed into the island’s nation’s territory in an “intentional, reckless and provocative” incursion.
A pair of Chinese J-11 jet fighters crossed the centre line in the Taiwan Strait and entered the island’s southwestern airspace at about 11am on Sunday.

Taiwan then flew its own fighter jets out to ward off the Chinese planes, which came within about 185 kilometres of Taiwan.
Taiwan has called China’s move a provocation that seeks to violate the long-held tacit agreement between the two countries about the waterway dividing the island from mainland China.
Home to over 23 million people, Taiwan is an island off the southern coast of China which has been government independently from mainland China since the civil war in 1949.
But Beijing views Taiwan as a renegade province of China that must be brought back into the country – with force, if necessary.
The Taiwan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, said that the line crossing violated a long-held agreement between the two countries.
He said: “It was an intentional, reckless and provocative action. We’ve informed regional partners and condemn China for such behaviour.”
In remarks at a military awards ceremony, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said: “Chinese military aircraft provoked us by violating the tacit agreement by crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait.
“They backed to the west side of the median line after warnings by our Air Force.”
According to Focus Taiwan, the tense incident caused a 10-minute standoff between jets from the two sides.
