"Many Photos" - Britain faces Brexit moment of truth as EU exit WILL be pushed back for a year if MPs don’t agree this week

BRITAIN faces a Brexit moment of truth today – with a year-long delay on the cards if MPs don’t agree to to get Britain out of the EU as soon as possible.

The House of Commons will tonight vote on the way forward for Brexit – with MPs likely to endorse a much softer form of EU exit than Theresa May wants.

The PM could then hold a fourth vote on her deal, pitting the existing withdrawal agreement against a customs union.

As Westminster braced for the week that will decide Brexit:

  • EU bosses warned that Britain will have to delay leaving if MPs don’t back the deal quickly

  • The Commons prepared to back an ultra-soft path to quitting the EU

  • The Chief Whip admitted that a softer Brexit was now “inevitable”

  • Senior ministers were publicly split over whether to go for a No Deal exit

  • Jeremy Corbyn boasted he’s ready for a General Election

The House of Commons will hold a second round of “indicative votes” from 8pm tonight after Mrs May’s deal was defeated for the third time last week.

They will cast votes on three or four different options – likely to include the customs union, single market, a second referendum and cancelling Brexit altogether.

During the first set of indicative votes last week, MPs failed to find a majority for any of the outcomes they voted on.

But backers of the customs union and “Common Market 2.0” plans are confident they can win support this evening.

Mrs May is then hoping to make MPs choose between a soft Brexit and her deal, in a last-ditch bid to save her plan.

One EU official told the Financial Times that if the deal doesn’t go through today, Brexit is likely to be delayed for months.

The source said: “Either the UK asks for an extension beyond May 22, in which case it must participate in the European Parliament elections, or it must adopt the withdrawal agreement.”

Britain is currently due to leave the EU next Friday, April 12 – but Mrs May is almost certain to request a delay instead of leaving with No Deal.

Senior ministers are bitterly divided over whether Britain should go for No Deal or stay in the customs union if the PM’s deal is killed off for good.

Liz Truss said today: “I think we are well prepared for No Deal, I don’t have any fear of No Deal.”

But Michael Gove hit back, saying: “We have to leave the European Union in good order. Parliament won’t vote for No Deal. No Deal is bad for our economy and bad for our union.”

Matt Hancock warned that the UK is “in last chance saloon again”, adding: “In less than two weeks’ time the country has to decide whether to field candidates in the European elections.”

The DUP dealt a fresh blow to Mrs May’s hopes of saving her deal as MP Sammy Wilson blasted: “Should she bring it back a thousand times we will vote against it.”

Last Friday the withdrawal agreement was defeated by 58 votes.

To win a fourth vote on the deal, Mrs May would have to persuade around 15 of her own Brexiteer MPs and another 15 from Labour to back her.

European leaders have been openly mocking the UK’s political chaos after the events of last week – when we were supposed to leave the EU.

Germany’s Europe minister Michael Roth blasted: “Brexit is a big s**tshow. I don’t know if William Shakespeare could have come up with such a tragedy but who will foot the bill?”

His French counterpart Nathalie Loiseau made an appeal to MPs to back staying in the customs union.

She said: “If they vote for a customs union, we’ll discuss it. We’ve been telling them for months now – if you want to change the future of our relationship with you to be more precise, we agree.”
