WORRIED Michael van Gerwen admits Brexit will hit him in the pocket.
The Dutchman received £500,000 – the richest prize in darts – when he beat Michael Smith to win the William Hill PDC World Darts Championship on New Year’s Day.
The world no.1 has earned career earnings just shy of £7m despite not even turning 30 until April.
On March 29, the UK will officially leave the European Union and it represents an unknown landscape for many sports and top stars, both financially and commercially.
Asked about the ramifications of Brexit, Van Gerwen, 29, said: “It affects me really hard.
“I get everything paid in pounds so just have a look how much it might drop.
“Let’s say it dropped by 10% the pound compared to the euro, that’s cost me 10% of my prize money straightaway. So that’s quite a lot of money.
“I hope I’m going to get a visa. Brexit is horrible isn’t it? I don’t like it.
“It’s not about what’s on that (money) list, it’s what you’ve got in your bank account after tax, after cost, after everything. That’s the most important thing.”
Van Gerwen received a congratulatory phone-call from the Dutch PM Mark Rutte during his post-match press conference at Ally Pally.
Mighty Mike revealed: “He said he was glad I did it for Holland and blah, blah, blah. He probably had a list in front of him what to say!
“I’m quite happy with him as a Prime Minister. Did I vote for him? I’d rather keep that for myself. He needs to get the tax down please!”
Van Gerwen is looking to dominate the sport for the next decade until retiring around the age of 40.
He said: “I’ve been the king of darts for the last five years so why not? Keep the positivity going, that’s the most important thing.

“I love what I do and I work really hard to do things like this. People that know me know what it means to me and it means a lot.”
Van Gerwen has dismissed any chance of him facing Phil Taylor in a one-off money-spinning shootout, claiming the retired legend wouldn’t last the pace.
Van Gerwen, who goes on holiday to the Hong Kong and the Philippines, said: “He wouldn’t like to play me in a one-off match. If the format is too long he will get absolutely hammered.
“He’s twice as old as me – and I’m twice as good as him. Seriously, Phil Taylor is a phenomenal player of course, but he’s gone now.”
