IT’S a Saturday ritual – taking a deep breath and braving the supermarket for a big shop.
But you could be doing it all wrong, and be forking out way too much.
Here are some costly errors you might be making if you don’t plan ahead with your purchases.
1) Not knowing the price of food you buy regularly.
If you always buy certain staples, note down their price.
That way, if the price changes you’ll know to swap brands or shop elsewhere.
Last week, Waitrose hiked the price of four pints of milk up to £1.15, compared to Iceland where it’s £1.
2) Only buying for the short-term.
If you plan ahead and stock up your store cupboard for the long-term, your weekly shop will start to drop in price.
Saxa table salt is 45p for 70g, but hunt out the 750g option and it’s 90p but it will last ten times longer.
3) Not having a meal plan.
January is a good opportunity to streamline your meal planning.
The free Mealime app helps you find recipes and add the ingredients to a list that you can then take to the shops.
Buy 1kg of beef mince for £2.97 from Tesco (saving 78p compared to the 1kg from Asda) and make a bolognese and a lasagne. You’re already trimming your meal cost down to £1.48 per dish.
4) Shopping at the wrong places.
If you always visit the same shop, you might want to switch it up.
Market stalls can often offer cheaper fruit and veg, while newly opened supermarkets tend to run some big offers.
5) Buying too little.
Buy less and you’ll end up doing a costly last-minute midweek shop. Lidl is currently running their XXL sale, with offers including 48 Weetabix-style Bixies for £1.99, compared to £4 at other supermarkets.
Eat two a day and that’s 24 days of breakfast sorted for 16p a day.
6) Buying out of season.
When you buy fruit and vegetables in season, they nearly always cost less as there’s more of them around.
As February approaches, expect good deals on beetroot, spring greens and squash and pears.
See lovebritishfood.co.uk to see more of what’s in season and when.

It’s just incredible value for money
FOOTBALL fans Jade and Peter Round have just completed an amazing hat-trick of back-to-back Sun Holidays.
The happy couple, who are both Birmingham City supporters, couldn’t decide which park to stay – so ended up with three of their favourites.
The first weekend stop last year was picturesque Penstowe Park near Bude, Cornwall, followed by a mid-week stay at Parkdean Resorts in Bideford Bay, north Devon, and topped off with a long weekend at Pontins Brean Sands, Burnham-On-Sea, Somerset.
Jade explains: “Peter and I first met eight years ago and when it came to going on our first holiday together we went with The Sun.
“It was obviously the incredible value for money that attracted us – we even thought it must be too good to be true.
“But we agreed to give it a go and we have never looked back. From day one the holidays have been sensational.
“We have been on a Sun Holiday every year since and some times twice. Going on three was a first for us, but we loved it!”
While Jade, 26, works as a security officer, hubby Peter, 31, is a long-distance delivery driver.
The pair, who live in Dudley, West Mids, both put in a lot of hours and so their time together is precious.
And their Sun Holidays give them a real quality break where they can relax and enjoy their break from work.
“We love Cornwall and have been to several parks on the coast.
There is so much to see and we have always had really fantastic holidays. The scenery is superb and there are lots of breath-taking walks.
“Now, we have started exploring Devon and that’s why we included Bideford Bay on our triple stay.
“We had some time over and managed to book in at Brean Sands. It felt as if we had been away for weeks – it was certainly a great way to recharge our batteries.”
Peter explains that when it comes to choosing their holiday destinations they prefer to go for the beach locations.
That’s another real plus-point with The Sun – there are so many outstanding locations to choose from.
He says: “We have recommended Sun Holidays to family and friends. They are absolutely the best breaks money can buy.”
Parks get fab new features
OVER the past year, millions of pounds have been spent making the holiday parks better than ever before.
Haven Haggerston Castle, in Berwick-upon-Tweed, is adding a rooftop bar. And kids will go mad for the new multi-level soft-play area. Both open in June.
Or make a splash at Haven Seashore in Great Yarmouth, where the Shore Water Park opens in April.
The state-of-the-art park includes a flume 11m high, an Aqua Play area for little ones and a toddler pool with a slide and interactive games.
Adrenaline junkies can look to Haven’s Craig Tara park, South Ayrshire.
In the summer, its new Adrena-Line zip line opens, offering an exhilarating ride over the park at breathtaking speed. Also coming are The Jump and The Extreme Jump, simulating base-jumping thrills.
And foodies will love what’s on the menu at the new Pub & Kitchen at Butlin’s Skegness and Bognor Regis.
With so much to love at our parks, you will never be bored on your Sun Hol. The only problem is choosing where to go!
Pick midweek for best value
FOR the very best value on your Hols from £9.50, choose a midweek break.
You will get great deals on your holiday, including over 100,000 Hols from £9.50 with no extras to pay.
Plus, just to make your Sun Holiday even more special, when you book a midweek break, we will give you a fourth night’s stay completely free.
The deals don’t stop there.
We have teamed up with hundreds of UK attractions in the areas of our holiday parks to give our midweek bookers bargain entry to some great attractions.
Discounts on entry, two-for-one tickets and even free entry.
Book a midweek break and we’ll send you a web link that has all the offers available near your chosen holiday park.
During the week, the parks are quieter, meaning you’ll get a lot more relaxation on your hols.
These breaks are the perfect holiday for those with pre-school children and all-adult parties.
So when booking opens on Monday, January 14, make sure to choose a midweek break to get the most from your Sun Holiday.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
