New photo Murderers can take family snaps in a PHOTOBOOTH at a privately-run jail

Jail chiefs have installed a photo booth so prisoners can pose for snaps with their families.

Killers, rapists and violent thugs are among those using it with their partners and children during visits as part of their rehabilitation.

They can choose from a series of backdrops for pictures, including Christmas and jungle scenes.

Jails watchdogs described the booth as a ‘good innovation’ – but critics said the scheme, understood to be the first in England and Wales, was fresh evidence that jails are cushy ‘holiday camps’.

The policy will raise eyebrows at a time when drugs and weapons are regularly being smuggled behind bars and violence is hitting record levels.

Details of the photo booth emerged in a report yesterday by HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) into privately-run HMP Lowdham Grange in Nottinghamshire, which holds up to 920 male Category B convicts.

Former inmates include murderer Luke Toner, jailed for life in 2013 for a fatal shooting, and notorious Midlands gangland drug dealer Paul Hardy, who died there while serving a 12-year sentence.

Tory MP Philip Davies, a former member of the Commons’ justice select committee, said yesterday: ‘This beggars belief. Will they be able to use them to get a passport photo for a holiday when they are released? Unfortunately no one in the Ministry of Justice believes that prisons should be places of punishment any more.’

David Spencer, of the Centre For Crime Prevention think-tank, said: ‘It is frankly ridiculous that anyone thinks it is OK to make the lives of convicted criminals even more cushy.’

Private firm Serco, which runs the prison, said the booth was introduced in March last year. So far it has been used 2,200 times and is ‘extremely popular’.

It was brought in as part of efforts to help families and children have a more positive experience of visiting their fathers behind bars.

Inmates pay for photos with money they have earned in jail or that is sent in by family and friends.

Use of the booth is part of the prison’s incentives regime for good behaviour.

A source said: ‘This is part of our measures to strengthen family ties. It allows families to take photos with fathers, some of whom don’t have recent pictures.’

The HMIP report said: ‘There was a photo booth for prisoners and their families to take a group photograph, which was another good innovation.’

However, it also said violence is rising. In a six-month spell last year, the number of attacks on inmates and staff more than doubled to 147. Serco said it was looking at introducing booths to five other jails it runs in the UK.

Mark Hanson, Serco contract director at Lowdham Grange, said the firm was working to make improvements highlighted in the report.

Michael Spurr, chief executive of HM Prison and Probation Service, said: ‘We are committed to improving performance at the prison and we will closely monitor their response.’
