FRANK LAMPARD has conceded defeat in his pursuit of Chelsea ace Ethan Ampadu.
The Derby manager was keen to sign Ampadu, 18, on loan for the remainder of the season.
But the Premier League side are seemingly unwilling to let the youngster go.
Lampard, whose Rams side sit sixth in the Championship, said: “We have asked, but I don’t think he’s leaving Chelsea.
“He can play in a few positions, that’s why he would be so valuable to anybody and why he’s staying at Chelsea.
“People thought we did a lot of business in the summer, but our actual net spend was very negligible.

“I had to bring in personnel to try to change the style and that’s not a one-window solution, that’s probably two or three-window. This window will be quiet for us.”
Lampard used his links with Chelsea to bring in Mason Mount for the season last summer.
The attacking midfielder has six goals and three assists this season as Derby look to return to the Premier League after 11 years.
And signing the versatile Ampadu could have bolstered the Rams’ chances of promotion from a notoriously difficult league.
Unlike in the Premier League, EFL clubs are allowed to sign up to four players on loan from one club in a season, no more than two of which may be over the age of 23.
But it appears Lampard will have to look elsewhere if he is to strengthen his squad this month.
In his three appearances for the Chelsea first-team this season – one in the FA Cup and two in the Europa League – Ampadu has played at centre-back and in a holding midfield role.
And even though the Welshman has played more games for his country than his club this season, it appears Maurizio Sarri wants to keep him at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea seek domestic and European silverware.
Chelsea face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg tomorrow and will be desperate to defend the FA Cup.
They also have the Europa League to compete in with Swedish side Malmo their opponents in the last 32.
