JAMIE Murray admits he found glowing tributes to younger brother Andy “a little bit odd” – because he hasn’t officially retired yet.
The older Murray brother was in the Melbourne Arena stand on Monday night as the former world No.1 gallantly lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round.
Once the five-set classic epic was over, a montage of praise from top stars like Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic played on the screen.
Andy is flying to the UK today and is likely to undergo further hip surgery, which will KO his Wimbledon dream.
However, Andy has not officially quit the sport and doubles star Jamie said: “Was it awkward? A little bit yes, because he hadn’t said that he was going to stop then, and the stuff the Australian Open put on for him and the players saying goodbye was as if that was him done.
“It was a little bit odd but I understand why tournaments do that because if he doesn’t come back then they want to give him and send off and show their appreciation for what he has done.
“This tournament especially. He’s played five Grand Slam finals here which is a remarkable achievement really.”
Jamie is competing at the Australian Open in the doubles and mixed doubles. He was a winner of the men’s doubles with Brazilian partner Bruno Soares in 2016.

“There was a great atmosphere, great reception from the crowd. The support that he got from start to finish was incredible.
“If it is his last Australian Open then that’s a great way for him to finish and I’m sure he’ll be more than happy with that.
“He’s had an incredible career with a lot of remarkable moments on the tennis court, and the things he’s been able to achieve and performances that he’s been able to come up with and the titles and everything that he’s won.
“I’m sure he’ll go down as a legend in this sport.”
