New photo Gondolieri dress up as old women in Venice as Epiphany processions take place across the world

Thousands of people have taken to the streets and waters to celebrate the Christian festival of Epiphany with many dressing up, sharing gifts and lighting candles to mark the occasion.

January 6 commemorates the day that three Magi followed a star to meet baby Jesus in the Christmas story, giving the event its alternative name - Three Kings' Day.

Countries around the world start celebrations on the evening before and often wear costumes to look like the Three Wise Men. Epiphany also falls on, or a day after, Twelfth Night marking the end of Christmas.

In Venice today Gondolieri dressed up as Befana (old women) and steered their boats during a gondola regatta on the Grand Canal as part of the Befana feast celebrations for Epiphany Day.

In Italian folklore, La Befana is an imaginary old woman who is thought to bring gifts to children and fill their socks with sweets and presents on the night before Epiphany - however they receive coal if they've been bad.

While in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey people were seen jumping into rivers in a traditional challenge to retrieve a cross while in El Salvador members of the Los Historiantes group dressed up in brightly coloured King outfits.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
