Shocking pictures from the scene show a silver Ford Focus with a crumpled bonnet and smashed windscreen.

Police Sergeant Darren Hancock, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: 'A man has tragically lost his life as a result of this collision and we have specialist officers supporting his family.

'We know the Ford Focus travelled South East along Hall Street before it was involved in this collision and we're appealing to anyone who saw the car in the area beforehand to get in touch.

'Whilst we have a man in custody, I'd also ask any witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to call police as soon as possible so we can piece together the full circumstances surrounding this collision.'

Police closed Hall Street in the town while investigating the crash, but it has since reopened.

Detectives asked anyone with information to call GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident number 1858 of 02/01/2018, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
