Russia’s Tu-95 Tupolev bomber a.k.a. the “Big Bear” has been taking to the sky since 1952.
The USSR may have fallen but this 4-turboprop powered deadly weapon is still flying and spying on America…
…AND to this day, she’s still being intercepted by the USAF/Navy fighters along with our Allies.
From black and white photo era…
…to our Navy’s F/A-18 Hornets…
…to ‘Nam F-4 Phantoms…
…including, our Allies Eurofighter “Typhoons” (above)…
…Britain’s ol’ “Tornado” fighters…
….USAF’s F-15 Eagles…
…F-16 Fighting Falcons…
…US Navy F-14 Tomcats (“Maverick and Goose”)…
…and up to our modern F-22 Stealth “Raptor”.
Notice the propellers.
4 engines power 8 propellers in a contra-rotation (one spins left/other spins right).
From nose-to-tail, this bomber measures a length of 151-feet with a massive wingspan 164-feet (13-ft wider than length).
It’s got the old school element of 2 tail guns with duel 23mm auto-cannons.
It was an effective-ish defense back in the ’50s.
But the real threat is pretty straight-forward; “the Bear” can launch “Kh-102” missiles that are armed with nuclear warheads.
These missiles not only can make a mushroom-cloud, they’re not easy to detect.
They have a very low radar cross-section of a mere 0.01 square meters (10.7 sq. feet)
Plus these rocketing nukes are fast; they’re capable of traveling at a max speed of 270 miles-per-second.
Modern Kh-102 missiles are also accurate.
They’re controlled by using an electro-optical system for correcting the flight trajectory and with a TV guidance system for terminal guidance.
Finally, the Tu-95 can carry up to 8 nukes, each with 250-Kiloton warheads.
What’s that mean?
A single kiloton (kT) equals 1-THOUSAND pounds of TNT…as in, 250,000 kT per missile.
For perspective, the bigger of the two bombs dropped on Nagasaki, Japan named “Fat Boy” yielded (in the est. range) between 18-23 kT.
Although the “Bear” is big, it’s not as large as our B-52 “Stratofortress” bomber.
(B-52 pic Above and next 2 photos)
For comparison in size, the USAF’s B-52 measures in at 159-ft length X 185-ft wingspan.
Our “Stratofortress” also first took to the skies back in 1952 and both of these work-horse weapons are still ready to battle…pretty impressive considering that’s nearing 70-years ago.
Yep, many years of cat-and-mouse but hey Russia, “we SEE you”.
Hope you enjoy the time-line of USAF/our Allies tracking and intercepting this ol’ Bear.
For reference to our Allies, photo above, it the Eurofighter “Typhoons”
(and some Canadian F-18s in the mix).
