A CUSTOMER at a Wetherspoons pub was “flabbergasted” at the state of the toilets which had won an award for cleanliness just days before.
The loos at The Cherry Tree pub in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, were photographed by Tessa Howard 54, when she was shocked at how dirty they were.
The town centre pub won the Loo of the Year Award 2017 and 2018, and was awarded this year’s just a matter of days before Tessa found them looking “dirty and grimy” around 8pm on Monday last week.
Tessa said: “I am disgusted that the Cherry Tree won ‘loo of the year’ and appalled that inspectors deemed it suitable for a platinum award.
“The toilets are appalling; this photographic evidence shows the true state of them.
“I have spoken to other customers and we are flabbergasted (about the award).”
Comparing photographs taken when the pub won the award for cleanliness in 2017, it’s a far cry from the current state of the facilities.
She reported that the pull cord in the disabled toilet – which has since been fixed – was broken and the surfaces in the loos were “absolutely filthy”.
Although she didn’t go into the men’s loos Tessa claims to have been told they are just as bad.
Tessa added: “I know of other people who have complained to head office about these toilets in recent months.
“If these are the best toilets I would hate to see the worst. The disabled toilet is also a nappy changing room but I would not take a dog in there, never mind a child.”
The Cherry Tree and The Lord Wilson, both Wetherspoon pubs, were given platinum ratings by inspectors who made unannounced visits.
The platinum rating is given only to outlets which offer “exceptional toilets.”
The ratings are based on décor, maintenance, cleanliness, accessibility, hand-washing, drying equipment and overall management.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “ The Loo of the Year award was judged anonymously by Loo of the Year Inspectors.
“We take on board the comments from a customer to the pub and will deal with the situation.”
