Boris Johnson's useless water cannon have been sold for scrap - leaving the taxpayer with losses of over £300,000, it emerged today.

Mr Johnson bought the three controversial cannons in 2014 but was banned from putting the cannons into service by Theresa May, who was then Home Secretary.

He splashed out some £320,000 to buy and refurbish them, and they have racked up tens of thousands more in storage costs.

But after years gathering dust they have finally been sold - for just £11,025 to a firm that will dismantle the machines and sell them for parts, London's City Hall said.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that 'we have managed to finally get rid of them'.

Mr Johnson bought the three canon from Germany while he was London Mayor and in  the wake of the riots which tore through the capital in 2011.

But their purchase sparked a massive row with Mrs May, who banned them from being used to tackle riots. 

The cannon cost £322,000 to buy second-hand and then refit – including £32,004 for low emission zone compliance, £19,035 for re-painting, £3,109.20 for signage, and £970.50 for the fitting of radios and CD players.

They have now been sold to Nottinghamshire-based Reclamations (Ollerton) Ltd, who will dismantle them and export the parts.

Mr Khan said: 'For too long, London taxpayers have had to bear the brunt of Boris Johnson's appalling botched water cannon deal. This has been another waste of taxpayers' money by Boris Johnson.

'Londoners continue to live with his vanity. I am pleased we have managed to finally get rid of them and I made an election promise to Londoners that I would claw back as much of this cash as possible, and pump it into helping young people at risk of being affected by crime and giving them better life opportunities.'

The sale was announced as details were revealed of 72 youth projects that will receive the latest round of grants from the Young Londoners Fund.

The schemes, aimed at diverting young people away from crime, will receive a share of £13.2 million and include the Ben Kinsella Trust, Redthread and Football Beyond Borders. 

A source close to Mr Johnson said: 'Boris made tackling crime his number one priority when he came into office in 2008.

'During his time as mayor he reduced the murder rate by 50 per cent and brought overall crime down by 20 per cent. This is a legacy the new mayor has sadly been unable to match.'
