THERESA May’s leadership hangs in the balance today as Michael Gove weighs up whether to resign from the Cabinet.
The senior minister turned down the PM’s offer to make him Brexit Secretary – but hasn’t decided if he’ll quit altogether.
It comes as Mrs May fears a formal challenge to her position with furious Tory MPs demanding a vote of no confidence in the leader.
Backbench chief Graham Brady could announce at any moment that he has received the 48 letters needed to trigger a contest.
The PM is clinging to No10 by her fingertips after two Cabinet ministers were among five to quit over her Brexit deal.
Dominic Raab and Esther McVey accused Mrs May of selling out voters by signing up to an agreement which could keep Britain closely tied to the EU for good.
She won some breathing space last night as Mr Gove, the Environment Secretary, and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt stayed in their jobs for now.
But Mr Gove could yet walk out after refusing the promotion to Brexit Secretary.
This morning he repeatedly refused to tell reporters whether or not he plans to stay in the Cabinet.
He told the PM he’d only take the position if he was allowed to rip up her deal and negotiate a new arrangement with Brussels.
His resignation would be the biggest blow yet to Mrs May because he has become the key Brexit figure in her Cabinet over the past year.
Mr Gove has been the only Brexit-backing minister to support the PM’s strategy without reservations up till now.
MOST READ IN POLITICS
He is seen as a possible future leader, having stood against Mrs May in the 2016 contest.
But he is also deeply attached to his current job as Environment Secretary where he is seen as the most dynamic Cabinet minister.
Mr Gove has an emotional link to the portfolio – as a child he saw his fisherman father lose his business because of EU rules, motivating him to lead Britain out of the grasp of Brussels.
