A prison nurse has escaped jail after a judge described her fling with a 'monstrous' inmate as a tragic love affair.
Ashleigh Naylor, 30, fell for Paul Lane while he was serving 12 years for a 'barbaric' attack on an Iraq veteran.
Christopher Hall, 43, was left temporarily blinded in one eye and with a deep gash across his head which may have been caused by a bottle, a court was told in 2012.
Lane, 33, was jailed for 12 years for the attack and while in Holme House Prison in Stockton-on-Tees he met prison nurse Naylor.

When he was released earlier this year, Lane moved in with Naylor at her home in Skelton, North Yorkshire, and the pair went on to become a couple.
Ahead of his release, Naylor visited him 35 times and he was found to have more than 400 photos of her in his cell.
She then started to send him codes so that he could use a phone that had been illegally smuggled into prison.
Her illicit fling with the jailbird was discovered when a colleague visited her at home when she was drunk and she blurted out her secret, Teesside Crown Court was told.
While he was there, Naylor received a call from someone who flashed up on her phone as 'Paul' from a mobile phone.
The officer then discovered photographs of the couple on Naylor's Facebook page and reported his findings to bosses, sparking an investigation.

Prosecutor Harry Hadfield said the investigation revealed Naylor had twice sent codes to her lover so he could top-up the smuggled mobile phone.
Rod Hunt, mitigating, said Lane had been on day-release and could have sorted out his credit himself.
He told Judge Peter Armstrong that officials from the Offender Management Scheme had agreed that Lane could and should move in with his lover once he was released.
'It is one of those cases where she admitted it straightaway, and says now with hindsight realises the potential harm, but no harm whatsoever took place.'
Naylor admitted aiding and abetting the unauthorised possession of a device in prison, and was given a 12-month custodial sentence, suspended for two years.
Judge Armstrong told her: 'This was a genuine relationship with the two of you falling in love, and sometimes it happens without thought to the consequences.
'Prison officers on very rare occasions can be corrupt and can be put under enormous pressure by prisoners.
'It is a somewhat tragic story. You were of good character, doing a worthwhile job and now find yourself in the dock at the crown court.'

Lane's violent past was not mentioned but the same court in 2012 heard how he and accomplice Mark Collishaw left their innocent victim for dead in the street in Darlington, Co Durham.
Mr Hall was attacked as he walked home with friend Daniel Mitchell following a night out in Darlington town centre in May 2011.
He was left with a deep slash across his forehead and a badly-swollen face after being smashed in the face – possibly with a bottle – and repeatedly kicked on the ground.
Mr Hall, then 37, who served with the Army in Iraq, said in a statement that he had witnessed the horrors of war but nothing compared to the impact of the assault.
Teesside Crown Court heard how he was blind in one eye for three days, has been left scarred for life, suffers from memory loss and is apprehensive about going out.
Lane, 27, who landed the first blows after telling Mr Hall 'I'm going to bottle you', was jailed for 12 years, while Collishaw, 27, received ten years' imprisonment.
A third man, former Army chef Gary Black, 29, was given a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years, with a four-month electronic tag night-time curfew.
