New photo Man leaps off a wobbling lamppost on Westminster Bridge into the River Thames

Shocking footage of a man jumping off a wobbling lamppost into the depths of the River Thames has emerged.

The unidentified man leaps off Westminster Bridge and plunges into the the water  before being collected by a police boat.

The daring jumper reportedly appeared 'p****d as a fart' as he scaled the riverside lamppost and remained on it for around two and half minutes as it precariously swayed in the wind.

Eventually the man throws himself off and spreads his arm wide as he plunges into the river making a huge splash.

Cheers and shouts can be heard from the crowd that has gathered to watch as the man hits the water.

Edmond Murray-Pollock, 23, witnessed the scene on Sunday at around 10am with girlfriend Stephanie Walker, 22, whilst on a day trip to London.

Mr Murray-Pollock, who is a retail manager from Ipswich, Suffolk, said: 'We didn't think it was a suicide attempt and figured that he was p****d as a fart and probably had been dared by a friend to jump.

'There was a huge crowd on the bridge and a lot of others were pointing to the man - we took a look and spotted the man on the lamppost.

'I thought "wow that thing is wobbly".

'All of a sudden we heard the sirens going and saw a police cars and boats, and rescue boat turn up and then he goes for it.'

Mr Murray-Pollock recalls that the man swam towards the police boat after he jumped and a number of rubber dinghies were thrown to the jumper's rescue before he was hauled aboard.

The couple noted that yesterday was quite windy and a chilly day and assumed the water would have been incredibly cold.

He said: 'The lamppost was wobbling so much that it looked like something out of a cartoon or something.

'I think to be fair, his safest option down probably was to jump - it sounds stupid but it was so wobbly that if he had tried to come down normally he probably would have slipped and hit something harder.

'To tell the truth, I think so many people were shocked by the sight.

'I didn't see many people recording the footage and instead they were simply pointing and watching in awe.'

The Metropolitan police did not have any information on the incident.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have been approached for comment.
