IT is time for the decades of lies that took us into the EU and kept us there to end. It is time to be straight with us, Prime Minister.
Britain is a eurosceptic nation. In the 1970s, Ted Heath and Harold Wilson both knew we would baulk at belonging to a Common Market that robbed us of our national independence.
So they hid its true purpose — “ever closer union”, leading to a superstate with one currency. The public was reassured our sovereignty would not be surrendered to any meaningful degree.
The Tory and Labour leaders both knew this was a lie. But they kept quiet when signing us up in 1973 and when holding the first referendum in 1975.
Voters were betrayed from the start. And the pattern was set.
In 1992 John Major signed the Maastricht Treaty, creating the EU, without risking the public vote that saw it initially rejected by the Danes and Irish.
In 2005 Tony Blair — who now shamelessly praises fork-tongued civil servants for hoodwinking eurosceptic ministers — feared he would lose a referendum on handing new powers to the EU. So he refused to hold it.
His successor Gordon Brown, never big on honesty when a lie served him better, pretended this Lisbon Treaty was too insignificant to bother voters with.
The EU is founded on deceit. “When it becomes serious, you have to lie,” says President Jean-Claude Juncker. Voters are bullied into reversing inconvenient referendums or denied a say at all.
And so to Mrs May, the Brexit deal her Cabinet agreed last night and the revealing EU leak yesterday which makes crystal-clear Brussels’ intentions to keep us in its vice-like grip for ever.
That plan being to lock us into its Customs Union for all time, unable to make our own trade deals, powerlessly swallowing its orders and obeying its rules.
Our Government knows we cannot legally escape this central pillar of the EU — which we voted to “leave”, remember — without consent from Brussels that it will never give.
This is not some minor afterthought, to be bargained away, which is why MPs rejected it in July. It is crucial to the reclaiming of our sovereignty which a 17.4million majority including many Sun readers, voted for in 2016.
It is crucial to our post-Brexit prosperity. It looks crucial, too, to whether the deal lives or dies. Yet, knowing exactly what the EU intends for us, the PM still brazenly insisted yesterday that we WILL make our own trade deals.

How, Mrs May? We cannot. You surely know it.
Do not kid yourself no one is paying attention. The public has been sold a pup again and again. It has had enough.
Come clean with Britain. This deal is not wholly without merit. But let us see it for what it is.
