New photo Trump says it would be 'ridiculous' for Kavanaugh to withdraw over high school sex attack claim

President Donald Trump indicated Monday that he would not withdraw his Supreme Court appointment of Brett Kavanaugh in the face of an allegation that the judge sexually assaulted a woman when they were in high school.

The president said that Kavanaugh is 'somebody very special,' that he is 'an outstanding intellect,' 'one of the finest people' he'd ever met, and 'as high a quality individual' that anyone could ever know.

He said he had not even met with Kavanaugh since the allegation surfaced and called a question about a potential withdraw 'ridiculous' as reporters queried him on what would happen next.

Trump did however acknowledge an important political reality reality, however, which is that Kavanaugh's nomination was almost certain to be delayed.

'If it takes a little delay, it'll take a little delay. Shouldn't certainly be very much,' Trump said. 'I'm sure it will work out very well.'

Trump said he believes that Kavanaugh is 'very much on track' to pass still but that he wants Republican senators 'to be 100 percent happy themselves' when taking the vote.

Kavanaugh was at the White House on Monday morning for more than an hour, but he did not meet with the president, the judge's spokesman told DailyMail.com earlier in the day - something that Trump also confirmed as he talked in the afternoon to journalists.

That the president did not confront Kavanaugh himself was a clear sign that he intended to stand by the nominee he had hoped would be confirmed in by the end of this month.

Trump is aiming to have Kavanaugh on the court by Oct. 1, which was always a long shot.

The allegation against Kavanaugh from Palo Alto University professor Christine Ford, a registered Democrat, and calls from Republicans, including Trump for both sides to be heard, meant that consideration of the nominee would bleed into at least October.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had already said he'd break with precedent and keep the upper chamber in session in the weeks leading into the mid-term elections. Still, the challenge remains for Republicans to get Kavanaugh confirmed before the federal elections that could result in the GOP falling from power.

Trump had not commented on the allegation whatsoever prior to the event.

He was unusually disciplined in his Twitter use over the weekend as a hurricane ravaged the Carolina coastline. Tweets on Monday took aim at the Department of Justice and opined on tariffs.

The president wasn't even raging in private to friends, as he sometimes does, about the audacity of Democrats who knew about the allegation in July and kept it secret until last week.

Sources close to Trump said they hadn't heard from the president on the matter on Monday. A cadre of senior White House officials said the same thing.

The opaque window into Trump's was a reflection of the shrinking circle of aides and allies the president considers trustworthy following revelations that senior staffers like Omarosa were taping his conversations and other officials like the anonymous  New York Times op-ed writer are working against him.

It also showed just how taken aback the White House was by the 'Me Too' allegations that threatened to destroy Kavanaugh's nomination.

Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway, the only White House official to appear in public on Monday said that Ford 'should not be insulted and she should not be ignored' and that the White House backs the approach of Senate Republicans who say that Kavanaugh should also have a chance to be heard.

'I’ve spoken to the president. I’ve spoken to Senator Graham and others. This woman will be heard. I think the Senate Judiciary Committee will decide how and through which forum. In other words – will it be by telephone, will it be in person,' she said.

Conway said that Kavanaugh 'is a man of character and integrity who has been through six FBI vettings – which I can tell you first hand are significant and thorough.

She made note of the 65 women who backed him in a letter and said: 'He also has been lauded by women from every different aspect of his life and this is significant.'

'But let me make very clear again for those who want to slice and dice what’s being said today on behalf of the president, this woman should not be ignored and should not be insulted. She should be heard,' Conway said.

Officially, all inquires on Kavanaugh were being directed to his spokesman, Deputy White House Press Secretary Rah Shah on Monday.

Shah told DailyMail.com in an email that a meeting at the White House was not with Trump.
