A TRAFFIC warden has revealed he feels “lucky to be alive” after a gang of teenagers were filmed beating him while on duty.
Charlie Weston, 21, was at work as a traffic warden in Birmingham when he was allegedly ‘surprise attacked’ minutes after approaching a car to give it a ticket.

After only working on the road for 10 minutes, one man allegedly kicked Charlie in the throat before the gang of men kicked him and stamped on his head before stealing his bike as they fled.
Ex-security guard Charlie believes their motive was to draw blood and has now opened up about surviving the brutal attack, which took place at around 5pm on Friday.
Despite the attack leaving him in hospital for almost four hours, Charlie returned back to work at 10am yesterday morning determined not to let his team down.
Charlie, from Wolverhampton, said: “I didn’t notice people coming up behind me, I just turned and saw a man in a hoody with the cords tightened so I couldn’t see his face.
“I had almost booked someone further down the road for bad parking, but decided not to, and when this guy approached me he was asking ‘who do you think you are?’
“I went to say ‘excuse me’, and that’s when one of his friends kicked me from the side and threw me to the floor.
“I shouted ‘what do you think you’re playing at?’ but then they started taking kicks at me and continued to try and stamp on my head.
“I feel lucky with how I got out of the situation, I do genuinely feel lucky to be alive – I didn’t think I was going to get back up.
“I got hit by a car before, and that was life-threatening, but I feel like I was in more trouble here.”
After arriving at the road, Charlie explained he went to give a vehicle a ticket after they were parked in the middle of the road, but decided otherwise.
He believes he was set upon because he was wrongly believed to have given out a ticket.
“Literally two minutes later these lads came out of nowhere and did what they did.
“I didn’t notice that they’d taken the bike, as I had blood splattered in my face.
“While they were stamping on me, they kept on trying to take my helmet off but I just kept my head covered.
“At the time, while the beatings were happening, I felt in pain – but then the adrenaline rushed to my body and all I wanted to do was defend myself.
“I was on the floor for a good few minutes after it happened.
“I’m quite a big build and I can usually defend myself, but there was too many against one and the first kick was to the throat. I just feel lucky to be alive.”
“But now I’ve got discomfort in my lips and teeth, and I’m still having to take painkillers for a headache that could take weeks to go.
“I thought they’d broken my jaw when it had happened, but luckily they didn’t.”
While the attack was happening, Charlie was luckily on the phone to one of his colleagues who quickly alerted an ambulance to come and help him.
“I couldn’t call a code red over the radio because of what was going on, but he could hear all of the commotion over the phone so called it for me.
“That’s the only reason people came to my assistance.
“The ambulance arrived and gave me a once over, and then they took me back to base so that I could sign a statement and give a brief description of what happened to pass onto the police.”
Now, having returned back to work just nine hours after being released from hospital, Charlie is in constant fear of what will happen next.
“It’s made me nervous about my job – I’m wearing sunglasses on jobs at the moment so that people don’t recognise me,” he said.
“A lot of people now know who I am, and what’s to stop them from doing the same again.
“My family don’t like me doing this job, and we do actually get a lot of grief – it’s a dangerous and stressful job as all traffic wardens are targets.
“In any situation, you’re given the training to deal with that – but in some situations it just can’t help.
“In any real scenario, once you’re on the floor it’s near impossible to get back up, and I didn’t think I was going to.”
West Midlands Police said a 19-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of robbery after handing himself in and remains in custody.
A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of robbery has been bailed while investigations continue.
Detective Sergeant Tom Lyons, who is leading the investigation, said: “I was absolutely furious when I saw the footage.

“The level of violence used is truly shocking, and I know every right-minded person who views it will share that anger.
“We’ve already spoken to the victim. CCTV and other enquiries have already begun, but people in the community will know who these men are.
“I’d urge them to examine their conscience and do the right thing and give us the names.”
