THIBAUT COURTOIS has revealed he decided to join Real Madrid in March – and missed Chelsea training because he did not want to be a “toxic” influence.

The Belgium goalkeeper also admitted he felt “sad” over Chelsea fans turning on him over his drawn-out move.

Courtois completed a £38million move to the Bernabeu in August.

But he further alienated Blues supporters since moving there after claiming “the level is higher” in the Spanish capital.

Now Courtois has moved to clarify the situation and explain just what he meant with that apparent barb.

Speaking of his relationship with Chelsea fans, Courtois said: “It makes me feel sad, they don’t know all the truth.

“In March, the decision was already made and I thought the club would accept it.

“Then because the transfer was close, I didn’t show up [to training] because I thought it was better to not disturb the team, the squad.

“I thought if I did go there, I didn’t want to be toxic.”

And he expanded on his real desire to go Madrid.

Courtois added: “I said there was not enough quality at Chelsea. I never meant that.

“I just said that maybe in training it was a little bit faster [at Real] but also the quality of Real Madrid, but that’s not saying that Chelsea doesn’t have quality.

“I had a chance to go back to Spain, to go back closer to my kids and that was an important thing for me.

“Today’s media is all about those quotes and clickbait titles, but it’s OK.

“I know a lot of Chelsea fans will understand my decision and I wish them the best and I’m happy to see they won their first four games and I hope they can go on and win the league.”
