A SCHOOLBOY lost his legs after being set on fire when he was shocked with 25,000 volts on the roof of a train.

The 13-year-old came close to power cables on top of the stationary carriage parked up in a railway yard — which is used as a meeting place for youngsters.

The yard was easy to access and a common haunt for children and teens, a trial heard.

Four youngsters — the youngest being just 11 — broke into the area and two climbed up a carriage.

But one of them got too close to the live overhead wire and suffered the catastrophic and life-changing injuries.

Prosecutors say inadequate measures were in place to keep people off the premises.

A disused signal box known as the “haunted house” was a popular attraction to children at the Tyne Yard Railway Depot, near Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

Freight operator DB Cargo are standing trial at Newcastle Crown Court accused of failing to ensure non-employees – including the four children – were not exposed to risk.

The company denies the charge.

Prosecutor Gordon Menzies said the railway yard was a potentially hazardous area.

But he added: “It was made much more dangerous by the fact that in this yard, on the defendant’s land which it leased from Network Rail, there was a signal box which had not been used since 1991.

“It had a reputation among local children and was known as the haunted house.

“It was something of a lure to not just young children but older children as well.”

“The prosecution say the dangers those children were exposed to arise because of the inadequacies of the defendant’s arrangements for keeping that site secure.

“It was a hazardous area and was left insecure.”

Jurors heard that there are four access points to the yard — but only two are securely locked.

Describing the horror accident in June 2014, Mr Menzies added: “The children described a loud bang and (the second boy) was thrown to the ground.

“(The first boy) was set on fire and fell to the ground.

“He suffered life-changing injuries, including the amputation of both of his legs, one above he knee, one below.

The tragic teen also lost all the fingers and thumb on his right hand — two fingers and part of his left hand itself.

DB Cargo insists it had arranged security patrols of the signal box but only at night on weekdays, the court heard.

It also put up warning signs but pictures showed these had been ripped off.

Its own risk assessments showed it was a high risk environment, the court heard.

The trial continues.
