Manchester United staff believe Jose Mourinho could be sacked by the end of this week.

United produced a woeful display as they lost 3-1 at West Ham on Saturday to record their worst start in 29 years which leaves them nine points off the top of the Premier League table.

Players and staff were openly discussing the prospect of Mourinho losing his job following the game as they made the journey back to Manchester on Saturday afternoon.

Mourinho was already reeling from a week that saw his side dumped out at the third-round stage of the Carabao Cup by Championship Derby County and another public clash with £89million signing Paul Pogba.

Other players, such as Marcus Rashford, have also felt the manager's ire as Mourinho struggles to get his group to respond and divisions within the group grow.

Mourinho was locked in discussions with his backroom staff into the early hours following Tuesday's defeat to Derby and they are on tenterhooks as the tension continues to rise around him.

Ed Woodward has publicly stated he does not wish to make knee-jerk decisions in light of results and the fact United face Valencia on Tuesday is likely to delay any such decision further. However, the United executive vice-chairman cannot escape the growing unrest and lack of cohesive performances or results.

Mourinho will not walk away from a £15m a year contract but staff are well aware that such results cannot be allowed to continue for much longer.

United have dismissed suggestions that they have already spoken to Zinedine Zidane over Mourinho's job.

The Frenchman is available and understood to be keen on taking the post should United turn to him.

Woodward remains reluctant to make another managerial change but the degenerating atmosphere around the club could force the issue.

United players were captured arriving home on Saturday night after their shock defeat to West Ham, but Mourinho was nowhere to be seen.

Pogba and the rest of the first-team squad were pictured arriving back at Wilmslow station from London looking particularly downcast just hours after they dropped points once again in the Premier League.

It is expected manager Mourinho stayed down in London, where he still has his family home from his time in charge at Chelsea.

Pogba led the way as the United stars emerged from the station looking despondent in their black club tracksuits.

It comes on the back of other poor results and reports of unrest at the club, particularly between Mourinho and Pogba.

The France international has had the vice-captaincy taken off him and many observers are claiming Mourinho may be suffering from the 'third-season syndrome' that has dogged his career.

Both men were also caught on camera having a training ground spat after the French midfielder posted a video of himself laughing during United's Carabao Cup defeat to Derby in midweek.

It was the second time in the space of a week the Red Devils dropped points in the Premier League though after also falling to a 1-1 draw at home to Wolves.

Felipe Anderson opened the scoring for West Ham before a Victor Lindelof own goal just before half-time compounded their misery.

Marcus Rashford pulled a goal back for the visitors but Marko Arnautovic fired home a third for the Hammers to seal all three points at the London Stadium.

David de Gea, Nemanja Matic and Anthony Martial were also pictured exiting the station as they now turn their attention to midweek when they welcome Valencia in the Champions League.

Alexis Sanchez was also seen stepping out of the station forecourt, despite not playing any part in the game on Saturday.
