New photo Kmart: Thrifty mum surprises her three-year-old daughter with a bedroom transformation

A mother-of-two from Queensland has surprised her three-year-old daughter with a stunning room makeover using items from budget-friendly stores.

Louise Woods, a dental practice manager with a flair for interior design, wanted to create a more grown up space for her youngest and decided to turn to Kmart and second hand stores for inspiration.

The result? A chic, pink and grey transformation for just $350.

'I created a Pinterest board for my project and pinned pictures that I loved so I could see all my ideas in one place,' Ms Woods told FEMAIL (after)

'For further inspiration I also joined a group on Facebook about Kmart hacks and once the transformation was complete I decided to post some before and after pictures of my daughters room to inspire others.

'I was absolutely amazed with the response I got.'

Ms Woods was keen on a pink and grey theme but wanted to keep the bedroom walls neutral throughout the transformation.

What did Louise use?

Bed and side table were second hand $150

Little vanity, Kmart, $39

Lamp, Kmart, $20

Pink and grey vases, Pillow Talk, $20

Cloud bedding, Big W, $10

Selection of cushions, Kmart, $25

Dream catcher, Kmart, $7

Bedside musical box, Kmart, $10

Bedside cloud money box, Kmart, $2

Bedside glitter timer, $17, Sportsgirl

Wall pictures x 3, Kmart, $30

'I like to do this so when it's time to change the theme I don't also have to change the wallpaper and furniture,' she said.

'Most of the items were second hand or from Kmart, Big W, Pillow Talk or Sportsgirl.'

The bed and side table were second hand and Ms Woods scored them for $150 as a bundle deal.

'I love to change things around so I cant justify spending money on expensive items,' she said.

'The bed will be the centrepiece of the room now and for several years to come so choose a classic style that will last and theme appropriately.

'Theming a room for your child's passion may be fun but her interest in Barbie or The Wiggles is likely to be short lived.'

Ms Woods also suggested parents consider framed pictures, duvet covers or cushions that can be easily changed and to use white walls and furniture as a blank canvas for 'pops of colour'.

'If you have the luxury of space keep storage to the outer edges so that children have a good space in which to play,' she added

'Be imaginative and remember that decorative touches don't need to be too fancy or expensive to have an impact - keep things simple and functional.'

Ms Woods said her daughter was thrilled with the result.

'She absolutely loved it! She kept running around her room with excitement,' she said.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
