A SCOTTISH firefighter has spotted the end of a rainbow – but there was no ‘pot of gold’ waiting for him.
Scott MacLucas-Paton, 48, from Isle of Skye, Scotland, says he came across the end of the rainbow on Tuesday while climbing up Am Bhasteir mountain.
He took a photo of the scene showing a patch of ground illuminated by sunlight with a short rainbow rising from it, hinting at the pot of gold myth.
The backdrop of the dramatic Scottish mountains only adds to the fantasy of the picture, a sight few can enjoy.
Although the picture appears to show the end of the rainbow, it is an optical illusion as rainbows do not appear in specific locations – they look different depending on where they are seen from.
MacLucas-Paton, who was lucky enough to find the rainbow, said: “It was a cold day with sunshine and showers and sleet and lots of rainbows about.
HOW ARE RAINBOWS FORMED?
- Rainbows are an optical illusion formed of water droplets reflecting sunlight
- They don’t appear in a specific location but are viewed from a particular angle relative to the light source
- Any form of airborne water can create a rainbow, from rain to mist, spray, and dew.
- A colour spectrum is seen in a rainbow due to the prism of light formed in the droplets of water.
- The sequence of colours seen in a rainbow are: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
“I only had my phone so managed to capture this quick shot before it disappeared, I’d call it Chasing Rainbows.
“I love the fact that just one little spot was lit up by the sun and a short rainbow.”
Am Bhasteir is a mountain in the Cuillin range on the Isle of Skye in Scotland and is a popular spot for mountain walkers.

The end of the rainbow is said to be impossible to reach and for this reason it is the Irish leprechaun’s secret hiding place for a pot of gold, according to the myth.
However, MacLucas-Paton has been able to view and capture an image of the end of this rainbow in the Highlands, a sight rarely seen.
