X-MEN star Fan Bingbing has not been seen in public for three months, it emerged yesterday – sparking fears she has been jailed in secret by the Chinese government.
Bingbing, 37, who plays Blink in the hit franchise and also starred in Iron Man 3, is China’s highest paid and most famous actress.
The red carpet regular apparently disappeared from public life and hasn’t posted to her 63million social media followers since July.
There are rumours Bingbing, who made £33million last year, is being investigated for tax evasion.
According to Chinese state tabloid Global Times, Bingbing was caught up in a probe over her use of so-called yin-yang contracts.
This is a well-known tax dodge where a smaller contract is reported to authorities while a second, larger one, is treated as tax-free income.
The paper said she had one contract for tax purposes, saying she was paid £1.1million (10million yuan) and a separate private contract for £5.7million (50 million yuan).
Chinese state newspaper, Securities Daily, said the investigation was the reason for her disappearance – describing Bingbing as “under control and about to receive legal judgment”.
A notice of censure issued by the party’s propaganda department condemned the film industry for “distorting social values”, “fostering money-worship tendencies” and encouraging the young to “chase celebrities blindly”.
The authorities also announced new limits on the salaries of actors.
A report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and a leading Beijing university ranked Fan in last place, with a 0 per cent rating in terms of “social responsibility”.
The report blasted her “negative social impact”.
Bingbing is one of the most popular personalities on China’s social media platform Weibo but hasn’t posted since June 2.
She last posted to her 3.6million Instagram followers on May 23 with a red carpet picture.
Yesterday, her 37th birthday, it received messages from well-wishers.
One fan said “Miss you & happy birthday” and another wrote “Hope you are OK and come back soon”.
Bingbing is engaged to actor Li Chen, 39.
But Chen, who proposed to Bingbing on her birthday one year ago, has also disappeared from public life – and hasn’t posted on Weibo since July 6.
