A NEW picture has emerged of ‘novichok assassin’ Anatoliy Chepiga, allegedly disproving Kremlin denials that he was awarded the Hero of Russia honour by Vladimir Putin.
Unmasked GRU spy Chepiga, 39, is believed to be the man behind the alias of Ruslan Boshirov, who travelled to Salisbury in March at the time Sergei and Yulia Skripal were poisoned with a deadly nerve agent.
The new picture was found after Russian journalists trawled through hundreds of images showing a Wall of Heroes at the Far-Eastern Military Academy attended by the suspected poisoner.
“From various photographs it could be seen that the wall is decorated with portraits of alumni who have received the Hero of the Russian Federation award,” reported the British-based Bellingcat investigations team which has led revelations on the story.
The Hero of Russia honour is the highest the Kremlin can bestow.
Bellingcat said that “many photographs” discovered by Prague-based Radio Svoboda “showed a portrait at the far end of the wall that resembled Chepiga”.
But “no photograph found until today showed the last column of photos in sufficiently high resolution to be able to identify the face of the colonel.”
Now an image emerged showing “the face and name of Col. Chepiga with sufficient quality to make identification possible”.
The team claims that the image matches of pictures of Chepiga and those of Boshirov from CCTV cameras on his controversial visit to Britain with another suspected GRU agent using the alias Alexander Petrov.
Bellingcat concluded: “This new photo, seen against the backdrop of a mountain of additional evidence, will present a fresh challenge to Russian authorities who can no longer credibly deny — or even equivocate — that it was Colonel Chepiga who, in his own words, travelled to and back from Salisbury, and that he was furthermore the recipient of the Hero of the Russian Federation award, traditionally presented by the Russian president himself.”
Initial claims that highly-decorated Chepiga and Boshirov are one man were dismissed as “nonsense” by the Russian foreign ministry.
The latest finding disputes a claim by Putin’s own spokesman Dmitry Peskov that “there is no data that the Hero of the Russian Federation has been awarded to [anyone named Anatoliy Chepiga.]”
He also claimed that any similarities were coincidental and said the Kremlin would stop commenting on the matter since the claims did not have official backing in Britain.

Separately, it has been claimed that Colonel Anatoliy Chepiga was the Russian intelligence officer who sprang toppled Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych to safety during the 2014 Kiev revolution.
The sensational version may explain the award by Vladimir Putin to Chepiga of the Hero of Russia award.
Another claim suggests that the 39 year old military intelligence officer’s wife Galina – mother of his two children – has also worked as an undercover operative.
