Winston Churchill is regarded as one of the greatest leaders of all time for uniting Britain during the Second World War and playing a pivotal role in defeating the Nazis.


But in a political career spanning more than seven decades, he had his share of controversial moments.


1. In 1937 he said he had no sympathy for Red Indians of America or the black people of Australia, who were enslaved and succeeded by whites. He said: 'I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly wise race to put it that way, has come in and taken their place.'


2. Churchill advocated the use of chemical weapons. In a 1919 war memo he wrote: 'I cannot understand this squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisoned gas against uncivilised tribes.'


3. He took little action when in 1943 India, then still part of the British empire, experienced a famine in which 3million people died. 


4. In January 1919, he became Britain's Secretary of State for War and Air. Eleven days later the Irish War of Independence began. He deployed the controversial 'Black and Tans' to fight the IRA.


5. Churchill accepted cash for influence. In 1923 he was given £5,000 by two oil companies, Royal Dutch Shell and Burmah Anglo-Persian Oil Company (which became BP) to help them in their application to the government to become a merger. He was known to accept gifts and money through his career.
