New photo England Women manager Phil Neville believes Team GB bid for a squad at the 2020 Toyko Olympics is an “extra incentive”

THE home nation FA’s have confirmed that Team GB will be going for qualification for the women’s football tournament at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

FIFA confirmed on Monday that they had received written confirmation for the women’s team.

Great Britain did not take part in the last Olympics in Rio 2016 after Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales opposed the idea but there was a Team GB women’s team for the first time in London 2012, the squad was knocked out in the quarter finals.

The British team, which was captained by Casey Stoney – now Manchester United Women manager – won all three of it’s group-stage games which included a 1-0 win over Brazil at Wembley but lost 2-0 to Canada in the quarters.

The side consisted of 17 England players and two from Scotland but if successful for Toyko it is thought the likes of Jess Fishlock of Wales will be vying for a place in the squad.

Speaking at St. Georges’ Park ahead of the friendly with Brazil on Saturday, Neville said: “It is exciting for the girls but I don’t think we can look beyond the World Cup. We have to finish third out of the UEFA teams so we know we have to perform well.

“I have kind of put aside talk of the Olympics becuase if we take our eye off the World Cup we will end up with egg on our face.

“I did notrealise how big an event it would be for the players when we got told. Therewas genuine excitement in the room. There is no better time to be a Lioness.

“It’s an incentive rather than a pressure. It is a bonus. You think about standing on the podium with a gold medal around your neck but first I want to stand on a podium in France as the World Cup winners.”
