A series of incredible photos taken by a British Army officer during his travels through Asia in the early 20th century have been revealed as they come up for auction for the first time.
Godfrey Dickson Tanner worked as a stationer in India before he served as a captain in the Royal Engineers at the outbreak of the First World War. He used India as a base from which to explore further east - making several visits to China and Japan.
Tanner, from Lewes, East Sussex, returned to India following the war and in his lifetime he took over 4,000 photos which are now being sold at auction by Dominic Winter, of Cirencester, Glocs, with a pre-sale estimate of £14,000.
The majority of the photos were taken during first spell in India from 1907 to 1913 where he was based at Regent House in Simla and have now been consigned for sale by a British photograph archive which has owned them since Tanner's death aged 88 in 1964.
Tanner was fascinated by the local population and took many photos of street performers, stall holders and spiritualists, as well as a sacred five legged cow. Another bizarre photo captures a boy playing cards with two monkeys.
Chris Albury, a specialist at Dominic Winter, said the photos 'represent his complete archive' and said Tanner had 'a good eye for photographing indigenous people and scenes'.
Godfrey Dickson Tanner took hundreds of photos of typical Indian street scenes, including this bread seller in Delhi (left) and watchmaker at a bazaar in Shimla (right). Tanner spent a great deal of time during his Army service in India and returned to the country after the First World War
Among Tanner's most unusual subjects was this mystical five-legged cow which he snapped on a street in British Calcutta. The cow was believed to have been sacred by the local population as most cows are still revered for their holiness by Hindus in India today
A woman with her children in Matiana, near Shimla. Shimla was a British hillside town which had been constructed to give troops and colonial rulers somewhere to escape to in the hottest summer months. The hilly region of Himachal Pradesh was much cooler than the plains of Rajasthan
A variety of scenes from early 20th century China are among the collection of photographs going up for sale at auction. In these pictures, a man can be seen having his haircut (bottom left) and a traditional method of sawing wood can be seen in action (top center)
Another of Tanner's incredible pictures shows an Indian child playing cards with two monkeys. The majority of the photos were taken during first spell in India from 1907 to 1913 where he was based at Regent House in Shimla as he made almost daily excursions to photograph local people
A meditating man sitting on top of a basket in an Indian street. Tanner's most notable subjects are typical Indian people going about their daily lives. Dominic Winter, the auctioneers responsible for the sale of his archive said he had ' a good eye for photographing indigenous people and scenes'
Tanner was said to have used India as a base from which to launch himself into other photographic projects across Asia. Pictured here are several of the scenes he managed to capture in China during his travels, including several shots of beggars and the traditional Chinese method of using hand and foot warmers
A group of musicians playing instruments in the street in India to try and raise some money. Among the instruments being played are the 'chande', a large drum with tribal connotations, and the pungi, a wind instrument often played by snake charmers on the Indian subcontinent
A man consulting an astrologer on the street of Burma's capital Rangoon. British rule in Burma lasted from 1824 to 1948. After the Japanese invaded Burma during the Second World War the British could not hold on to power in the region despite defeating the invaders due to anti-British sentiment
A spiritualist meditating on the dusty ground in India. Spirituality in general is seen as a process of learning the secrets of the world beneath and outside to gain inner peace. It is prominent in both North and South India and is particularly popular among the Hindus of the country
As part of his travels through India Tanner visited the city of Calcutta, renowned as both a seat of British power and a place of extreme poverty. Pictures show beggars playing music in the streets and people in white robes going about their daily lives in the crowded city
The so-called 'main street' in Peking, China at the start of the 20th Century. Peking was a center of trade during the early 20th century as British merchants ferried goods to and from Hong Kong to be shipped back to Britain. The most traded goods included tea and ceramics
