UNDERDOG Alexander Povetkin will be looking to cause a seismic shift in the world of boxing as he takes on Anthony Joshua at Wembley.
And the mandatory Russian challenger will have his Perun Axe necklace on as he heads to the ring, but what is it and why does he wear it?

Why does Alexander Povetkin wear a necklace to the ring and what does it symbolise?
Alexander Povetkin wears a necklace of an axe to the ring before every fight.
The axe is a replica of that said to belong to Perun, the Slavic Pagan God of thunder and lightning and the highest God of the Slavic pantheon.
Povetkin also has a tattoo of the symbol of Svarog on his bicep.
What is Rodnovery and does Povetkin follow the Slavic Native Faith?
Unlike most Russians, who are Orthodox Christian, Povetkin practises traditional Slavic Pagan beliefs.
Rodnovery is a reincarnation of pre-Christian beliefs popular in Slavic countries.
There is no formal religious authority and followers tend to organise among themselves, with some academics suggesting it is not a proper religion but an umbrella term for a variety of different pre-Christian Slavic religious beliefs.

In a 2014 interview with Russian media, Povetkin seemed to explain that different sectors in society worship different Slavic Gods.
He commented: “There was polytheism [in Pagan Russia].
“For example, you are engaged in agriculture – your god [is] Veles. I’m a warrior – my god Perun. Svarog is the ancestor of the gods.”
On his personal beliefs, he confirmed that he is Pagan and not Christian.
Povetkin said: “Both [Rodnovery and Orthodox Christianity] are our story.
“But to me both in conscience and in spirit, it is closer to what was before Christianity. What was in Kievan Rus [the first Russian state].
“Therefore I am a pagan.”

How is Povetkin’s religion received in Russia?
Many Russians have welcomed the return to traditional folklore and spirituality represented by Rodnovery, but Povetkin has been criticised by some, particularly in the church.
He said of Orthodox Christian Priests: “They say it’s from Satan, from the unclean.”
And when Povetkin lost to Wladimir Klitschko in 2013, Moscow-based Hieromonk Dmitry (Pershin) blamed his loss on his Pagan faith.
He said: “The main mistake is, in my opinion, that a victory cannot be won at any cost.
“No sport achievement can be won at the cost of losing one’s soul. And not any kind of energy can be allowed into one’s inner self.
“The spirit of the forbearers was of no assistance to Povetkin during the fight,” he said.
“Povetkin spoke about his Orthodox faith at the beginning of his sport career, but then he switched to neo-paganism, which can be seen from his new runic tattoos and the pagan little song that fills the air when he steps on the ring sometimes.
“Instead of getting new tattoos Povetkin should have trained more.”
Father Dmitry added that he hoped Povetkin would find his way back to “the genuine Orthodox faith”.
