New photo Pirates kidnap 12 crew members from Swiss merchant ship off Nigeria

PIRATES kidnapped 12 crew members from a Swiss merchant ship in Nigerian waters today.

The vessel was around 45 miles south west of Bonny Island when the incident took place.

The crew members were snatched as the vessel was around 46 miles from Bonny Island. Vessel not pictured.

Massoel Shipping, said the ship was carrying wheat from Lagos to Port Harcourt, when it was boarded by pirates.

The thugs left seven crew members on board, and details of their nationalities have not yet been released.

Nigeria’s navy and maritime police said they were unaware of the kidnapping and would investigate.

Massoel Shipping said in a statement: “The company is working with the authorities and specialists to secure the speedy and safe release of those being held.”

Kidnapping for ransom is a common problem in parts of Nigeria and West Africa.

Last month a tanker with 19 crew members on board was reportedly hiacked, after it went missing in pirate-plagued waters close to Gabon.

Two Russians and 17 Georgians were on board, but no further details on the purpose of the vessel were released.

A number of foreigners have been kidnapped in the last few years from the southern Niger Delta.

The region is the source of most of Africa’s crude oil, and is a huge pump to west Africa’s economy.
