National Cheeseburger Day celebrations are nearly here and many burger outlets will be taking part in honouring the iconic food by giving them out for free or at discounted prices.

One chain taking part is McDonald’s, which is giving away 200,000 free cheeseburgers across Australia. All customers have to do to collect their free burger is download the MyMaccas app on their phone.

Beginning at midnight, customers can get a free cheeseburger by redeeming the free burger voucher in the My Rewards section of the app. A change from last year means that in 2018, customers don’t actually have to buy anything to claim the free burger.

McDonald’s upped the ante on last year when it only offered up 100,000 free cheeseburgers by doubling the amount for the 2018 day.

Over in the US, Wendy’s also took things to the next level, saying it will celebrate National Cheeseburger Day all the way through to the end of the month.

In fact, Wendy’s started celebrating the day all the way back on September 8, when Wendy’s mobile app started offering free Dave’s Single with any purchase. The fast-food restaurant said this offer will refresh every day until September 30.

In a world full of crazy and sometimes ridiculous national holidays, there is one that is near and dear to Wendy's heart – National Cheeseburger Day,’ the company said in a statement.

It added: ‘And because one day of hot and juicy burgers is never enough, Wendy's believes you deserve to celebrate through the end of the month.’

When is National Cheeseburger Day 2018?

National Cheeseburger Day 2018 will take place on Tuesday, September 18.

What is National Cheeseburger Day?

National Cheeseburger Day is the ‘celebration of one of the most iconic and delicious foods of the USA,’ according to Days of the Year.

On this day, many fast-food establishments such as Wendy’s and McDonald’s celebrate the day by giving out free cheeseburgers .

The very first cheeseburger is thought to have been made at a Los Angeles diner, O’Dells, which had it on the menu, served with cheese and chili for 25 cents. Another claim is made by Kaelin’s Restaurant, which says it invented the cheeseburger in 1934.

The trademark for the term ‘cheeseburger’ was awarded to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In. However, he didn’t enforce the exclusivity rights and the term spread into popular usage.
