LABOUR will today unveil plans to end the “scandal” of academy schools in an “education revolution”.

Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner will vow to call time on academies operating outside of council control and instead allow town halls and parents to set up “co-operative” schools in their local patch.

Earlier this summer the Labour leadership candidate said too many trusts running academies were “failing”.

Today’s pledge will form a central plank of Labour’s plans for a National Education Service – of free “cradle to grave” schooling for kids of all abilities.

Academies were set up by Tony Blair’s Labour government. They are state funded but managed by trusts outside of local authority control.

Many have run into financial difficulties.

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said Angela Rayner would be the party’s new Nye Bevan – in creating a free education system to mirror the free NHS Labour established at the end of WWII.

Labour has already ledged to remove the VAT exemption afforded to private schools.
