HARRY KANE and Erik Lamela ended Tottenham’s mini-slump on a filthy night at the seaside.
Kane’s first-half penalty and substitute Lamela’s second-half strike were enough to halt a run of three defeats, the worst sequence of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign.
Spurs were far from their best, but they avoided another slip-up at the rainswept Amex.
Brighton could not reproduce the kind of display that had earned them victory against Manchester United and their slight improvement in the second half was all for nothing when Lamela scored.
Michel Vorm’s training ground injury meant Spurs had to turn to their third-choice goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga to make only his second appearance for the club.
But it was Brighton counterpart Maty Ryan who was soon called into action, saving well after Toby Alderweireld’s header from a tenth-minute corner had taken a big deflection off Gaetan Bong.
The home side suffered a blow a few minutes later when key midfielder Dale Stephens was forced off with injury.
Tottenham, though, were unable to take advantage until they were awarded the penalty.
Initially the home fans cheered as the wall dealt with Trippier’s free kick but soon they were booing as referee Christopher Kavanagh pointed to the spot.
Replays showed Murray had been guilty of a blatant handball and Kane made no mistake from the spot.

Brighton had been a shadow of the team that had beaten Manchester United a few weeks earlier.
After Christian Eriksen had fired just off target, the home side went close through a deflected Solly March effort and then had the ball in the net only for Shane Duffy to be rightly ruled offside.
Anthony Knockaert had a great opportunity to make it 1-1 but hit his shot tamely at Gazzaniga after beating Alderweireld.
Lewis Dunk headed over the bar from a corner, but the game was over when Danny Rose crossed and Lamela finished crisply.
Ryan made two late saves from Kane but with Dele making a late appearance as a substitute, this was a wet weekend Spurs could enjoy.
Knockaert’s goal on the break, after Kane had been denied by Ryan for the third time in the dying minutes, proved too little too late.
