THERESA May paved the way to a softer Brexit as she announced another delay to hold “national unity” talks with Labour instead.
In a dramatic live TV statement from No10, the PM revealed she will ask the EU to postpone the UK’s exit date yet again, this time to May 22.

And she issued a fresh invitation for new cross-party talks with Jeremy Corbyn, so the two of them can present a joint plan for a Brexit deal that the Commons can finally pass to end four months of deadlock.
The move – that stunned Westminster – is a major shift by the PM as she pivots to relying on Labour votes to get a deal through and gives up on winning over hardline Tory Brexiteers.
And it infuriated leading Tory Brexiteers who now want Mrs May to carry out No Deal next week.
Mrs May’s 6pm announcement came after a marathon seven-hour emergency Cabinet meeting to try to end the crisis, with just nine days to go until exit day on April 12 and still no deal in place.
Addressing the nation, the PM declared it “a difficult time for everyone”.
LEAVING WITH DEAL IS ‘BEST SOLUTION’
She added: “I know there are some who are so fed up with delay and endless arguments that they would like to leave with No Deal next week.
“But leaving with a deal is the best solution.
“Passions are running high on all sides of the argument.
“But we can and must find the compromises that will deliver what the British people voted for.”
But Mrs May’s plan now risks a devastating permanent Tory party split.
Seething arch-Eurosceptic chief Jacob Rees Mogg branded her plan “an attempt to overturn Brexit” by “doing a deal with the socialists”, adding: “It’s very serious”.

But her offer to Mr Corbyn also presents him with a massive dilemma that could split Labour down the middle as well: cooperate with the Tories to deliver a softer Brexit, or refuse and push for a second referendum instead as many party members want.
On another day of high drama in Westminster:
- Rebel MPs will try to rush a new law through Parliament in a record nine hours to try to stop the threat of a no deal Brexit.
- Emmanuel Macron softened France’s hardline stand to say he would allow a long Brexit delay after holding No Deal crisis talks with Irish PM Leo Varadkar.
- Labour party chiefs have threatened to withdraw all election campaign support from ‘Leave’ MPs if they back the PM’s deal.
- Former Brexit Secretary David Davis warned as many as 20 die-hard Tory Brexiteers would rather bring down Mrs May’s Government than back her softer deal.
- Britain’s reputation as a world-leading place to do business is being “trashed” by the Brexit crisis, the boss of Siemens warned.
