The youngster was staying with her gran Margaret Cook when she picked up the drugs from a coffee table and took an accidental and fatal dose, in September 2017.

Kaitlin who attended Unity College in the town had been in poor health despite there being no trace of disease or viral infection, a Burnley inquest heard.

Two days before her death she was sent home from school and went to stay with Mrs Crook who took her to the doctors.

TOOK PILL TO NUMB PAIN

Kelly Canavan, Kaitlin’s mum, said: “She was in a lot of pain, she was complaining about the pain in her shoulders and arms. She had been poorly before with a number of things, such as appendicitis.

“If she was in pain, she knew what all of us three took them [the painkillers] for, so she knew what they were. She was 12 going on 18.”

Kaitlin’s dad Jason Clegg said: “She came to stay with me on Saturday, September 9, and I don’t remember her complaining about any illness or not feeling so good. She was just her usual self.

“Over the days that followed, she was in touch with me on Facebook and I had a conversation with her on September 12. She was complaining that she was always really, really tired.

She fell asleep and I woke her up at one point to check her temperature. I then said that she should go back to sleep and she said ‘yes, I love you Nanna.’

Mrs Crook said: “She was unwell and she was prescribed some medication – ibuprofen and paracetamol.

“I sat up with her until about 4am. It’s possible that she got up in the night, but she was in a lot of pain and was struggling to get up.

“She fell asleep and I woke her up at one point to check her temperature. I then said that she should go back to sleep and she said ‘yes, I love you Nanna.’

“I kept the pills on the coffee table and the prescribed medication was there too. It’s so I can remember to take them. So, they would’ve been quite near to where she was on the settee.

FATAL DOSE

Paediatric Pathologist Dr Melanie Newbold who carried out a post mortem said: ”There was no evidence of serious bacterial disease, or even viral infection, in Kaitlin. She had no underlying signs of any serious diseases that hadn’t been diagnosed.

“Therefore, we have a girl who has been found dead, unexpectedly.”

Dr Newbold added that the amount of painkillers found in Kaitlin’s system was “very high concentration. The result was very, very high indeed.”

She added this was a “significant finding” and that the youngster died as a result of the powerful “toxicity” of the drugs.

She said: “But it is impossible to tell how many pills she had taken or over what period.”

Area coroner, Richard Taylor, said: “On the balance of probabilities, it’s likely that she took them knowing that they were painkillers, but without any knowledge of the effect they would have on her.”
