"Many Photos" - Phil Jones says Man Utd can challenge for Premier League title after Solskjaer named permanent boss

PHIL JONES is adamant Manchester United will be title contenders next season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge.

Solksjaer won 14 of his 19 games in charge after Jose Mourinho’s exit and was rewarded with a three-year deal last week.

Jones, who signed a new four-year deal last month helped celebrate the new era with a 2-1 win against Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday and thinks the club can be in the mix to win the Premier League next term.

The England international said: “I don’t think we’re far away.

“I think obviously we had a poor start to the season. It’s sort of like a story of two halves of the season, really.

“That (challenging for major trophies) is the vision for the players, for the staff, for the fans, everyone involved in this football club.

“It’s a wonderful place to play football and that’s where we want to get back to.

“We need to knuckle down.

“We need to play better than we did (against Watford), but we need to keep improving as a team.

“We’ve not got long left of the season now but let’s see where we can go. Then we can recover well in the summer and have a good start to next season.

“I think the fans, the media, everyone can see what he (Solskjaer) has done and how he wants to play since he came, and I think we’ve shown that in quite a few games.

“It’s positive and we’re looking forward.”

Marcus Rashford, who missed England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers with injury, opened the scoring for the home side with his 10th Prem goal of the season.

Anthony Martial doubled United’s lead after the break before Abdoulaye Doucoure scored late on for the Hornets to make it a nervy ending for Solskjaer.

United go to Wolves on Tuesday night two weeks after losing at Molinuex in the FA Cup quarter-final.
