MILLIONS of families will hit the road tomorrow as they make an early Easter getaway.

An estimated 5.3million leisure trips will be made by car as soon as schools break up, the RAC predicts.

It will be part of a weekend of congestion as 14million journeys are made between tomorrow and Sunday.

But a second wave of traffic jams is expected during the Easter bank holiday weekend in two weeks.

RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: “With the Easter bank holiday falling so late this year we are expecting to see a double wave of getaway traffic — firstly at the end of this week and then again two weeks later for the four-day weekend.”

However, it could be a chilly start to the Easter break. Drivers can expect short, sharp showers with the possibility of snow on higher ground in the North.

The RAC urged drivers, particularly those heading long distances, to check their cars before setting out.

Mr Dennis said: “It can mean the difference between a completed journey and one disrupted by a breakdown that ruins the start of a holiday.”
