JOYFUL Arsenal fans revelled in another “Spursy” Tottenham defeat and have now begun making plans to celebrate “St Totteringham’s Day” after a two-year absence.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men were set to claim a deserved point at Anfield before Toby Alderweireld inadvertently bundled into his own net after a howler from Hugo Lloris.
The result continued Tottenham’s recent dismal Premier League run, with the 1-1 draw in the North London derby their only point in their last five fixtures.
At the beginning of February, Spurs were challenging for the title but four successive away defeats have seen them slip back into the race for a Champions League spot.
The most recent of which could be considered cruel as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield after an Alderweireld stoppage-time own-goal.
The result means Tottenham remain in third place, but losses to Burnley, Chelsea, Southampton, and the Reds have now left them just one point ahead of Arsenal.
St Totteringham’s Day 2019
The Gunners, who were 12 points behind their fierce rivals before that losing run, can now go two points clear of Mauricio Pochettino’s side should they beat Newcastle.
This meant Arsenal fans were understandably delighted at another costly Spurs defeat, with one fan writing: “St Totteringham’s Day 2019 is on lads.”
Twitter user Max Meads agreed with that post, as he wrote: “Anyone fancy meeting up for drinks for St Totteringham’s Day this year?”
That day is the name given by Arsenal fans to the date that Spurs can no longer reach the same number of points as them, therefore are guaranteed to finish below them in the table.
Latest Arsenal News
Spurs have finished ahead of the Gunners in each of the last two seasons, meaning celebrations for St Totteringham’s Day have had to be cancelled.
But after the defeat to Liverpool, that day could be on this season, and Arsenal fans are revelling in the prospect of beating their rivals to a Champions League spot.
Another fan added: “Nothing will warm my heart more hang seeing spurs host Europa games in their new shining toilet bowl next season.”
While one fan claimed: “Tottenham would bottle a participation trophy.”
