"Many Photos" - Irish school placed into lockdown after gunman opens fire at the gates

Irish police are hunting for a gunman who opened fire outside a school in a west Dublin suburb as part of a suspected feud involving two criminal families. 

Officers raced to the scene outside  the Riversdale Community College in Blanchardstown around 3.40pm. 

A garda spokesman confirmed no-one was injured in the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

Nobody was injured in the incident and gardai  have appealed for the public's help for information following this afternoon's incident 

Local TD Jack Chambers said there had been a recent escalation in violent crime in West Dublin, but firing shots outside a school during the day 'marks a very alarming precedent'

The incident is believed to have been as a result of a feud between two criminal families in the area.  

Local TD Jack Chambers said: 'There has been a recent escalation in violent crime in the West Dublin area as of late but the fact that someone could consciously attempt to cause grave harm by firing gun shots outside a school in broad day light marks a very alarming precedent.

'This latest incident will have proven traumatic for parents and students who were in the immediate vicinity. There is no doubt that innocent people felt frightened.'

The Fianna Fail politician said local gardai were doing their best to increase their visibility but he said additional resources were needed.

'For such an incident to occur in a residential area within yards of a school in the middle of a weekday afternoon is not normal and should not be treated as a normal part of everyday life,' he added.

Gardai today searched the area looking for evidence to link the gunman to the crime

Mr Chambers said the shooting will have been a concern to students and parents at the school
