"Many Photos" - Grieving wheelchair-bound dad reveals DIY SOS team ‘saved his life’ after transforming home following wife’s death

A GRIEVING wheelchair-bound dad has revealed how the DIY SOS team saved his life after transforming his home following his wife’s death.

Former roofer Darren Hudson, 47, broke down in tears as he praised the team for creating “our forever home” that “still has all its memories”.

The widower, from Hessle, near Hull, said he “doesn’t know where I would be” if the experts hadn’t given his home a complete makeover.

He told the Hull Daily Mail: “If this hadn’t happened I don’t know where I would be and we’ve come a long way as a family over the past 12 months.

“I’m still fighting my demons and that will continue for a while but this has given us a massive boost.

DEVASTATING INJURY

“I don’t know if I’d still be here and I dread to think if the work hadn’t been done where I would be today.”

Darren suffered a devastating injury that left him wheelchair-bound and unable to walk two years ago.

He was confined to a hospital bed for months and then forced to share his son Oliver’s bedroom downstairs.

Then just months later his childhood sweetheart Sarah, 45, was found dead by her sons in their family home on Boxing Day.

If this hadn’t happened I don’t know where I would be and we’ve come a long way as a family over the past 12 months.

Darren, who is dad to Harvey, 15, stepdad to Mike, 25, and adopted dad of Oliver, 18, who is severely disabled, said he was left “physically unable to cope” after Sarah’s death because the house was “not set up for his situation”.

In the show due to air on BBC tonight, presenter Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS team, along with hundreds of volunteers helped Darren turn his life around in April.

NEXT CHAPTER

Footage shows Darren break down in tears as he said: “This is the next chapter for us.

“What you have done for us guys, it’s our next chapter. It’s the next step forward which is massive for us.

“Words don’t even seem enough. I have been in there and I didn’t even recognise my house. In fact it’s not a house, you have brought the home back for us.

“I can actually get upstairs and it might seem nothing to you guys but to me it’s everything.

“You have given me the full house back where I just had the downstairs for so long. It’s something we needed so bad and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“It’s amazing. Thank you so much.”

Darren added: “We have still got our memories, the memories are real, the memories will always be here.”
